I don’t know about you, but one of my biggest loathes of going on holiday is the packing and unpacking on my suitcase. Over the years I have been known to throw everything in my suitcase and end up taking things on holiday I didn’t need to or for a ‘just in case’ which never happens. Once back from holiday my suitcase sits in the corner of the room for at least a day or two whilst I overcome my holiday blues. I have got much better at packing these days and here are my top tips!
Tip 1 – Make a List
Who doesn’t love a list? Making a list seems to solve every problem. This isn’t just a list which says ‘PACK SUITCASE‘, it’s a list which breaks down everything you need to take in the suitcase into manageable chunks. I separate my list into different categories and find this the best way to both limit what I take and to ensure I don’t forget anything! My typical categories are:
- Hand luggage
You can of course tailor this to meet your own needs. Within each category I will list what I need to pack.
Tip 2 – Pack Early
Leaving packing until the last-minute means picking everything in your wardrobe up and thinking you’ll wear it all. Within my list I will note how many ‘evening’ outfits so that I don’t over pack. I also make sure I start this list in advance so that everything I want to take has been washed.
Tip 3 – Plan your Outfits Ahead
This goes in hand with tip 2. I like to look at what I want to take and see what can be worn with it to try and limit how many items of clothing I take. For example, I will pick out a top I want to wear and see what skirts, trousers and shorts will go with it. This is much more effective than taking 3 of the same black top!
Tip 4 – Decant your Products
Everyone is always suckered in by the mini toiletries for their holiday because what’s better than your favourite shampoo in that mini bottle. However, it works out much more expensive to buy your favourites in the mini size to take away! There are of course some things which come in a handy mini size that are perfect to take away (I for one purchase a mini hairspray and heat defence – who wants to weigh a suitcase down with an unnecessarily large bottle?). I’m not saying take the full size, instead, I decant the full size product into a small travel size bottle. You can pick these handy little bottles from the highs street.
Tip 5 – Share Products
If you’re heading away with someone, make sure to share your toiletries (or as many as you can) and split the weight. Travelling with my boyfriend is easy as we tend to use the same products so we are able to split them easily.
Tip 6 – Check Hotel Amenities
If you’re on a strict weight limit, why weigh your suitcase down with electrical items you don’t need? I always tend to see if where I am staying has a hairdryer. It will most likely not be that great, but at the end of the day it’s better than taking my hefty one from home. Nine times out of ten I only rough dry my hair when I’m holiday and let it dry naturally whilst I’m getting ready.
