So, a little bit of a different post today, but a very important one. The Alzheimer’s Society launched their campaign for Cupcake Day which was to take place on 16 June. The campaign hopes to raise money for the all important cause as well as awareness for the charity. I decided to take part for this worthy cause because my Nan was diagnosed with dementia around Christmas time in 2014. She had been having a series of health issues although she was a previously fit and well she was deteriorating quickly. It was whilst in hospital for a hip break it was noticed that her mental health was not up to scratch and she was not able to answer the standard questions. It was at this time she was diagnosed with dementia. Sadly, my Gramps was unable to look after my Nan at home and so she had to go to a home specialist in Dementia and Alzheimer’s.
As soon as I heard about the cupcake day I knew I wanted to take part.
Luckily, my work were very supportive of the cause and agreed for me to hold the sale on the day in our staff room. As it was the day England played Wales in the Euro’s, an English and Welsh theme was proposed. As well as the cupcake sale I also decided to create a Trivia Quiz for colleagues to take away whilst they enjoyed their baked goods. In the lead up to the day I’d had visions of being the only person to bake and only selling 12 cupcakes, but I have some very generous colleagues who took time out of their Wednesday evening to bake.
I was overwhelmed with the cake tins when I walked into my office Thursday morning. My colleague had kindly been taking them in before I had arrived. We took them into the staff room and set up the display. As you can see, we had quite a few!
My workplace love a bake off competition and the cupcakes were judged by a kind volunteer. It was quite the task with all the cakes but a winner was picked along with second and joint third places.
The winning cupcake was a ‘Lemon Daisy Cupcake’ and here is Michelle with her winning creation. A very deserving winner, if I do say so myself!
I made these ‘Ice Cream’ cupcakes and a recipe can be found on Baking Mad.
It was such a nice morning and was really lovely to see everyone supporting such a great cause. Final count up to come, but so far it looks like we have raised over £120. Not bad for some mid week baking!
